SONiC Booth Demos at Open Networking & Edge Summit 2025

This demo explores the integration of SONiC and VPP (Vector Packet Processing) to achieve high-performance software networking. We will walk through the seamless deployment of a prebuilt SONiC-VPP image, demonstrating how to set up and configure the environment directly from a GitHub repository. Attendees will see how SONiC’s control plane applies configurations to the VPP dataplane and gain insights into extensive performance metrics using FD.io CSIT test results. This demo is ideal for engineers and architects looking to leverage SONiC and VPP for scalable, high-performance networking solutions in cloud and data center environments.

This demo shows how to set up a VXLAN tunnel using SONiC and VPP in a containerized environment. We will deploy a prebuilt SONiC-VPP container, configure VXLAN with BGP EVPN, and check how traffic flows between two routers. The demo will also use VPP’s packet tracing to show how VXLAN packets are sent and received. Attendees will learn an easy way to launch and test VXLAN networking with open-source tools.

Provide a live demo with PoE capable switch.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality is now integrated with the Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI), enhancing management and scalability for enterprise edge deployments. PoE delivers both power and data over existing Ethernet cables, powering devices like IP cameras and wireless access points. Standardizing the PoE API within SAI ensures compliance with RFC standards, simplifying power delivery and device management at the network edge. This integration promotes interoperability between devices from various vendors, simplifies edge network deployment, and enhances scalability for future growth. We'll explore the technical details of this PoE integration with SAI, its impact on edge infrastructure, and its role in creating more efficient network solutions. Additionally, this functionality is being integrated into the SONiC platform, further strengthening its capabilities for enterprise deployments.

Monitoring and troubleshooting network infrastructure running SONiC OS can be challenging due to the distributed nature of its services and databases. SONiC Insight is a comprehensive monitoring and visualization solution that provides real-time visibility into critical SONiC components, including the Redis database, Docker container performance, system health, and network telemetry. By leveraging Prometheus for data collection and Grafana for visualization, SONiC Insight consolidates key metrics into a single intuitive web interface.

By connecting SONiC with the OpenStack BGP dynamic agent, we enabled multicloud connectivity between on-prem clusters and hypervisor-based environments such as Azure and AWS. The SONiC and OpenStack instances run on Equinix bare metal. All infrastructure resources deployed in Azure, AWS, and GCP were provisioned using Terraform and, when needed, configured through Ansible.
